Atomos unveils Shogun 7 – the ultimate monitor, recorder and switcher with unbelievable HDR. April 04, 2019. Atomos has had a string of announcements over the last couple of months, most notably three new 1500-nit, HDR-ready field monitors/recorders. I got hold of one of the first batch of their Shogun Flame units in for review. When the Atomos announced the Flame series (Shogun, Ninja and now Inferno), I was very intrigued.

It's not quite an apples to apples comparison but as monitors go, the SmallHD takes the win on image quality and the Atomos takes the win on user friendliness. In my dreams there's a collaboration between SmallHD and Atomos which combines the user fantastic interface and recorder from the Atomos with the screen tech and features of the SmallHD... I use this with DSLR on small hand held rig with monitor attached to a support arm. Certainly more cumbersome then handheld video recorder but I was able to balance the DLSR with a long arca clamp and slide the camera (with arca style plate mounted in longitudinal rather then typical direction) to allow for balancing the camera with different lenses. I've written a full comparison between the Blade and a competing product, but I'll do a little comparison here between the Ninja 2 and Blade.
